What Is Keratosis Pilaris?

Have you ever noticed small, rough patches of bumps on your arms, thighs, cheeks, or buttocks that resemble the skin of a plucked chicken? Do not be alarmed yet because this very common skin condition is medically termed Keratosis pilaris, also referred to as chicken skin because of its appearance.

Keratosis pilaris, as we mentioned earlier, is a common and utterly benign skin condition where small bumps develop on your skin due to excess keratin. This condition is harmless and does not require any treatment, but it can get aggravated during the winter months or during pregnancy, thus drying your skin further.

Causes For Keratosis Pilaris

The bumps that are a result of Keratosis pilaris are actually due to protein keratin buildup. These bumps are often mistaken for pimples. Keratosis pilaris occurs due to the clogging of pores. Healthcare providers and researchers do not have an explanation for this condition or why it affects a handful and spares the others. But it has been noticed that Keratosis pilaris might be more common among people who have had brushes with eczema, a severe skin condition that causes extremely dry, itchy, and coloured patches of skin.

Treatment For Keratosis Pilaris

As we had mentioned initially, Keratosis pilaris is harmless and does not require any serious treatment as it tends to fade away on its own. It does have the tendency to mess with the aesthetics of your skin, but worry not because the inclusion of a few simple steps into your skincare routine can ward them off!

1. Exfoliation
